What do you get when you combine a socially responsible company with environmental awareness? You get Bamboo Sk8. Recently, I had the virtual pleasure of chatting with Geoff Koboldt of Bamboo Sk8. A skateboard company not like most out there because of Bamboo Sk8’s unique product line. As you may have already guessed Bamboo Sk8’s chief product is a skateboard made from 70% to 100% bamboo. Of course the benefits of bamboo are enormous. First, bamboo is entirely sustainable unlike the traditional maple wood that most skateboards are made of. Bamboo is a grass and renews itself readily, and, once cut grows 4 or 5 new shoots thus making it an endless renewable resource. Construction of these bamboo boards are also done using water based glues helping protect the air we all breathe and reducing the amount of VOC’s.
The people at Bamboo Sk8 seem to be doing all the right personal things as well, from helping out the local community by introducing an after school skateboard program to sponsoring various charities including the Action Sports Environmental Coalition, World Wildlife Fund, Musicares, Tony Hawk Foundation and many more. Bamboo Sk8 has even donated decks to a variety of orphanages and charities from India to Brazil to Compton.

Bamboo Sk8 decks have really good pop and concave. The bamboo is lighter than the maple and you can get your tricks higher. They don’t chip easy either. I know most skaters hate when there deck chips, and bamboo doesn’t chip as easy as maple! Bamboo decks are the best board I’ve ever skated.

When I here Bamboo I think of a fresh nice new deck that I can depend on, a board that helps the environment, a board that will not snap, a board that is light weight, has lots of pop, and is inexpensive unlike the average maple deck.

I love my bamboo deck for a few reasons. One obviously because it is made of bamboo it tends to last longer, retain its pop, and generally is lighter and more durable than most. On the other hand it’s made affordable and makes you feel like your doing something for the world you live in to help make it a better place for the coming generations. I love Bamboo Sk8 decks so much, because I don’t feel like I’m betraying mother nature in buying a 40 year old tree turned into my play thing. I’d rather the eco-friendly alternative which is Bamboo. Bamboo is a renewable source for decks and therefore is the only true Green option for skateboarding. I am a proud user of Bamboo, and I will never fall back on Maple again. THERE IS ONLY ONE WAY TO SKATE. BAMBOO FOR LIFE.
