The making of "Soul Surfer"

“Soul Surfer”, the surf movie featuring the life and courage of Bethany Hamilton, is already atremendous success. The film tells the true history of a young surfer girl who has been attacked by a shark and struggles to make her dreams come true.

In the opening weekend, “Soul Surfer” reached the fourth place in the box office making more than $10 million dollars. The life story of Bethany Hamilton is almost religious because she believed everything was possible after losing one arm.

Faith, determination, passion for surfing and the will to win led Hamilton to a surfing national title, while competing at the highest level all over the world.

Anna Sophia Robb, Dennis Quaid and Helen Hunt star in “Soul Surfer”, but the biopic aims to reach for other stars, like the values of love, family and health.

The surf movie has been accused of being a “too Christian”. Nevertheless, “Soul Surfer” will always be a film about the power and influence surfing has on young girls and boys.

Tears come and go and smiles will always prevail. Those who have had the opportunity to meet Bethany Hamilton will certainly tell how much they got inspirated by her aura and survival story. Source: SurferToday

Shark shield to make surfing much safer

South Africans have invented a electromagnetic shield that protects humans from the shark attacks. The idea has already been tested and saved lives.

The technology is based in a three dimensional electrical wave form that induces spasms in the sharks’ snouts, saving surfers and swimmers from severe injuries and deaths.

After the series attacks at the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh, the local authorities have showed interest in buying devices to protect the tourists.

The shark shield does not interfere with the movement of ships and boats and can be safely used by anyone. There’s even a special device for surfers. It’s a compact light-weight unit designed specifically to be mounted on watercraft including surfboards and windsurf boards. Source: SurferToday

A 10-year-old bodyboarder was bitten by a shark at Crescent Beach, Florida, USA. Seth Shorten was attacked in his right foot. The shark’s tooth was found inside the wound by rescue personnel. Fortunately, the young bodyboarder did not suffer major injuries.

The scientists believe that the east coast of Florida isn’t more dangerous now than it was last year. Florida is known for having smaller sharks like the blacknose, spinner, sharpnose and blacktip. Source: http://surfertoday.com

Bodyboard Saves A Life

Wednesday, February 10th, 2010

Last week a young New Zealander named Lydia Ward was swimming with her brother on Oreti Beach when she was violently attacked by a shark.  The shark had grabbed onto her hip and started to pull her out to sea.

Courageously, the 14-year-old did not panic and grabbed a nearby bodyboard using it to repeatedly hit head of the attacking shark.  Amazingly, Lydia did not suffer any major injuries from the shark or its bite.  When asked how she knew what to do in case of a shark attack, Lydia recalled an account of a surfer that chased away a shark with a surfboard.

Who would have thought that a bodyboard could ever save a life?  I know the next time I’ll jump in the water I’ll have my eyes peeled for any sharks and always keep my trusty board close at hand.  For more amazing stories about survival check out http://www.thesurvivorsclub.org.
