Once again I find new and amazing uses for skateboard decks. This skateboard furniture trend is really something awesome. I have seen skateboard wheels converted into clocks and other home decor while skateboard decks have been put to good use as coffee tables. Now, I found these great skateboard seats; and what a variety of seats! Old decks being used to create stools, lounge chairs, benches and even love seats. How awesome! You have to admit this would make very cool looking furniture in any home and definitely be a conversation starter. Be ready to answer many questions if you have any of these items in your home.

Skateboard wheel clock

Skateboard wheel clock

The creativity of reusing old skateboard parts never ceases to amaze me. I have featured several blog posts about old skateboards and surfboards being turned into fine art pieces as well as functional and really cool looking furniture. Now, skateboard wheels have a unique usage in home decor. Introducing the skateboard clock and coat rack.

The skateboard wheel clock uses 12 polyurethane skateboard wheels and bearings to tell time while the skateboard coat rack uses the same wheels on coated metal wires used to hang things on. I love it. I’m not sure where these items can be purchased but a quick online search will yield some results. Stay stoked!

Here is another great use for old skateboard decks: Turn them into shelving for your home. What a simple and smart re-use of a deck instead of just tossing it out and having it end up in a landfill. This home accessory definitely will make a statement in any room. I’m sure people would notice it and be the topic of conversation. After all, what better way to store your books or other tchotchke in your possession, especially if you are a skateboard enthusiast. And now, another great use for skateboard decks instead of dumping them in landfills. Presenting the skateboard staircase. I’m always a fan of creative ways to re-use things instead of just junking them. The skateboard staircase certainly fits that bill. This ingenious staircase is the brainchild of ROAROCKIT out of Toronto, Canada. Their web site is full of DIY and how to’s regarding skateboard building and craftsmanship. To learn more about ROAROCKIT please visit http://www.roarockit.com This staircase would look cool in my home… if I had a second story. Oh well, at least others can benefit from this eco-friendly application.

Boards Sprouted Of Bamboo

Saturday, February 27th, 2010

What do you get when you combine a socially responsible company with environmental awareness? You get Bamboo Sk8. Recently, I had the virtual pleasure of chatting with Geoff Koboldt of Bamboo Sk8. A skateboard company not like most out there because of Bamboo Sk8’s unique product line. As you may have already guessed Bamboo Sk8’s chief product is a skateboard made from 70% to 100% bamboo. Of course the benefits of bamboo are enormous. First, bamboo is entirely sustainable unlike the traditional maple wood that most skateboards are made of. Bamboo is a grass and renews itself readily, and, once cut grows 4 or 5 new shoots thus making it an endless renewable resource. Construction of these bamboo boards are also done using water based glues helping protect the air we all breathe and reducing the amount of VOC’s.

The people at Bamboo Sk8 seem to be doing all the right personal things as well, from helping out the local community by introducing an after school skateboard program to sponsoring various charities including the Action Sports Environmental Coalition, World Wildlife Fund, Musicares, Tony Hawk Foundation and many more. Bamboo Sk8 has even donated decks to a variety of orphanages and charities from India to Brazil to Compton.

So for a truly unique product that performs and is environmentally responsible, look no further than Bamboo Sk8. Check them out here: http://www.bamboosk8.com

PS – The boards look really great too.
